A Snappy Thank You

This is just a quick post to say thank you to the kind guys at the Jacobs store in Victoria, London.

The festive period gave me another chance to use my new Olympus EP-1. Unfortunately as soon as I took my first landscape photo I noticed a horrible mark slap bang in the middle of the photo.

What’s that? Off with the lens, and there it was a speck on the sensor. Gutted!

It turned out to only be a small issue but at the time, new to photography and fresh from being told to be careful with the sensor and watch out for camera killing dust, I was gutted. I thought I’d buggered it up before I’d even got used to it. Sad face.

Once back home in London I took it to Jacobs near where I work expecting that they’d be able to clean it for a price. Upon showing them they said they’d be able to sort it but didn’t have the necessary kit in the shop. However, they were expecting a delivery that day so they could try get the stuff delivered.

True to their word what they needed was delivered so back I went, and out the back they went with my camera. 5 minutes later he emerged fixed camera in hand. He explained that it had been some dried condensation on the glass in front of the sensor and that it had been simple to remove. Off he went back to his other customers. “Is that it?” “Yep.” “What no cost?” “Yep, all part of the service.” “Oh ok, thanks very much I appreciate it.” And with that I left a rather happy customer.

They went out of their way to help me and to sort out my problem. It was very kind of them and something I’m no longer accustomed to. This sort of thing rarely happens anymore so it’s always a nice surprise when it does. It showed me service isn’t dead and, even as a web enthusiast, I think we’d be missing out if all of these types of shops close. There is still a need for these types of shops, shops that are run by knowledgeable people that provide nice friendly service. I certainly doubt this sort of experience could be replicated online. A human touch is required.

I left very pleased thinking next time I need something camera related they will be my first port of call. My experience of their service has made me want to give them my custom. It was a great advert for the importance of the experience side of things. A whole topic currently being explored by many people in the web industry. It is a fascinating subject which I think is vitally important. Our lives will be made better by having better experiences with everything use and do.

All that when all I wanted to do was say thank, maybe it was going somewhere but more like that I got a tad carried away.
Expect snaps aplenty from now on (check them out on my flickr stream). And once again a massive thanks.
